Setup EDIABAS (Information)

To set up EDIABAS with the K+D CAN cable for use with ISTA (BMW ISTA-D/Rheingold), follow these steps:

1. Install EDIABAS

• EDIABAS is required to communicate with BMW vehicles through the K+D CAN cable. It's typically part of the BMW Standard Tools package.

Steps:

• Download and install BMW Standard Tools (it usually includes EDIABAS, INPA, and NCS Expert).
• During installation, select COM1 as the interface, even if you’ll be using USB, since EDIABAS works with the virtual COM port created by the K+D CAN cable.
• After installation, navigate to the EDIABAS folder (usually in C:\EDIABAS).

2. Configure EDIABAS for K+D CAN Cable

• Open EDIABAS.INI (located in the C:\EDIABAS\Bin folder) using Notepad or any text editor.

Modify the following settings:

• Interface: Set this to STD:OBD (for K+D CAN cables).

• Port Settings: Make sure that the Port parameter corresponds to the COM port number assigned to your K+D CAN cable. You can check this in Device Manager on Windows:
  • Right-click the Start Menu and select Device Manager.
  • Expand Ports (COM & LPT) and check the COM number next to the "USB Serial Port."
  • Go back to the EDIABAS.INI file and update the Port parameter:

3. Install and Configure BMW ISTA (ISTA-D/Rheingold)

• Download and install BMW ISTA-D (often called Rheingold) from a trusted source.
• During installation, the setup process may include instructions for setting up the Rheingold and its components.

Setting up ISTA:

• Launch ISTA, then go to Settings and configure the "ICOM/VCI" settings.
• Select Ediabas/OBD for the connection type.

4. Install K+D CAN USB Driver

• If you haven’t already installed the K+D CAN USB driver, you’ll need to do this to use the cable. Drivers are often included in the software package or can be found online.

5. Enable Latency Timer Settings (for USB Serial Port)

• This step helps reduce the communication delays between the PC and the vehicle.
• Open Device Manager again and find the USB Serial Port (COMX).
• Right-click on it, go to Properties, and click on the Port Settings tab.
• Click Advanced and set the Latency Timer to 1 ms.

6. Test the Setup

• Plug the K+D CAN cable into the OBDII port of your BMW.
• Open EDIABAS and BMW ISTA and check the connection.
• If configured correctly, ISTA should recognize the vehicle and begin the diagnostic process.

Additional Notes:

• Compatibility: Ensure that your version of ISTA supports EDIABAS.
• 32-bit Compatibility: BMW Standard Tools (including EDIABAS) works best on 32-bit versions of Windows, though it can run on 64-bit with proper configuration.
• Cable Switch: Some K+D CAN cables have a switch for high/low CAN communication. Make sure it's set to the correct mode for your vehicle (e.g., most E-series vehicles use low CAN).

This setup should allow you to use your K+D CAN cable with ISTA for diagnostics and coding.
